Allan Draycott

A part-time lecturer in economics at City of London College who appeared on Mastermind in 1990. This initially proved to be a low-scoring series - Allan was on programme 11, and by scoring 34 (taking 'British Politics Since 1900') he became the first contestant in the series to score over 30. This caused the media to ask the question 'have the best brains been used up?', although it is more likely that the questions had been made harder in reaction to high scores in earlier series. Incidentally, the eventual champion David Edwards came joint second in the same heat with 27. In any case, Allan's winning score booked him a place in the semi-finals with 'The History of Test Cricket Since 1877', but he did not reach the final.
