David Stainer

David Stainer was captain of the Oriel College, Oxford team that lost in the University Challenge Final to Open University in the 1998/1999 series. Much to Stainer's delight, Jeremy Paxman called him a "strange bloke" after he buzzed instantaneously with the answer "56" to the question "What is the combined value of the letters in the word ZOO if A=1, B=2 etc.?"
He did appear on Fifteen to One a few years ago but was knocked out early on by some very tough questions.
He won Beadle's Money, won nine shows of 100 percent, and won £64,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? having phoned Ian Bayley with the question - "Who was the last British Monarch to be beheaded?" to reach £32,000. (The answer was Charles I).
In 2001, David captained the series winning team on Radio 4's quiz Masterteam the other members were Ian Bayley and David Brewis.
