Fifteen-to-One - A to Z

A is for Anthony Martin (pictured) - Holds the record for most appearances on 15 to 1, has been champion 3 times, and a top of the Finals Board winner.

B is for Buzzer - Speed on the buzzer is essential to be competitive in the final of the Grand Final. It is also the word for the sound when your time is up or if you get the answer wrong.

C is for Channel 4 - The television station who broadcast 15 to 1.

C is for Cripen - Mal Collier's correct answer to one of the longest questions in the history of 15 to 1.

D is for Ding - The sound you'll hear if you get the answer right.

E is for Eliminated - 14 players will normally end up this way at the end of a show. In the heats, first timers and former Champions alike run this risk.

F is for Finals Board - The top person on this will win a trophy at the end of the series.

G is for Guess - Sometimes the best tactic when you don't know an answer. See playing 15 to 1.

H is for Hesitation - You'll get four seconds to give your answer. Any longer, and you'll hear the buzzer.

I is for Instinctive - To win a Grand Final, you'll need to be lightning fast.

J is for John M. Lewis - The devisor of 15 to 1.

K is for Kevin Ashman - Former champion, winner of the Millennium Quiz, and the nation's premier quiz player.

L is for Lives - Starting with three, if you get your first two questions wrong, you'll lose them both. If the 40 questions get used up, the remaining ones will be worth 10 points each.

M is for McKaig's maximum - Bill McKaig scored a record 433 in 1999.

N is for Nick Terry - Fastest on the buzzer, has been champion more times than anyone else (four).

O is for Our previous winner - Previous winners are invited back on to the show.

O is for Ormskirk - The place in Lancashire which has produced three 15 to 1 Champions. Mal Collier, Andrew Francis and Dag Griffiths.

P is for Playoff - The method of reducing the number of contestants to 15 for the grand final when some are tied on the same score. Unscreened, some can be more exciting than the show itself. See the Trevor Montague page.

Q is for Questions - Lots of these in 15 to 1, most of the top players will elect to take them in the final round when the other option is to nominate.

R is for Regent - The production company owned by Pearson Television who make 15 to 1.

R is for Redhill - In Surrey, and home to both Nick Terry and a 15 to 1 audition centre.

S is for Sherlock Holmes - The Answer that gave Bill McKaig his 433 maximum.

T is for trophies - There are no cash prizes on 15 to 1. The honour of winning, a return visit, and a trophy for winning the grand final or finishing top of the Finals Board, are all that's on offer. To the left is trophy won by Dag Griffiths in series 28

T is for Trevor Montague - Former Fifteen to One champion.

U is for Uncertainty - Not knowing when you will be nominated, or what type of questions you will face go towards making 15 to 1 a very tough quiz.

V is for Victory - Although games are drawn sometimes, most will end in this for one person.

W is for William G. Stewart - Host and Producer of 15 to 1.

X is for X-ray eyes - You'll need these if you don't know the answer to the question. - 'If only you could see through this card'. see Catchphrases.

Y is for Yule - Donald Yule is considered by Trevor Montague to be the best quiz player never to win 15 to 1.

Z is for Zero - The number of lives, and number of points no-one hopes to end up with.
